Total bastards...
Some are human, some were human, some are monsters, some are demons, all of them are indisputable bastards
BUB
By Matt Compton
AKA:
Howard Shermann
Was a bastard in:
Day of the Dead (1985)
So what the Hell is he?...
Bub is one of the most famous zombies in all of zombie history. The reason for this is that he was the first zombie (before his spiritual big brother – Big Daddy) to display any sign of intelligence.
Kept in chains in an underground facility by a military scirntist Bub is slowly trained to remember his humanity. This is done mainly by giving him books to read (Stephen King of course) and music to listen to on his headphones (who knows? What does the average zombie enjoy anyway? Phil Collins perhaps?). Bub also learns how to use tools – specifically a gun. Small fry for the power tool using, rifle-toting, Molotov cocktail lobbing undead of Romero’s latest instalment in the zombie series, Land of the Dead but at the time this was a shocking development.
That’s not a knife…
No it isn’t but the important thing is that if it was Bub would probably have the smarts to know how to use it, clever little fella that he is.
Why, for the love of God why?!!?!
Well Bub has all the usual anti-social zombie motivations of wanting to eat human flesh and…well that’s it actually. He also demonstrates some loyalty to his father figure and trainer, Dr Logan however by avenging his murder.
So what’s the damage?
Bub doesn’t really get the chance to demonstrate his killing potential other than for the fore mentioned vengeance killing.
It’s a million to one chance but it might just work…
Being a zombie Bub can withstand a pretty large amount of damage to his dead and decaying body. What he can’t handle of course is the classic ‘remove the head or destroy the brain’ treatment. Fortunately we don’t have to see this happen to the friendly green guy and last time he is seen it is wondering off to whatever adventures a semi-civilised reanimated corpse can get himself into. Perhaps a spin-off film? No, wait, that’s stupid.
Words of wisdom
“Hello Aunt Alicia” – not a greeting to his actual aunt but a sentence Dr. Logan manages to teach him to say phonetically. Told you he was smart.
